The Atlas of Sustainable City Transport is an online data dashboard that displays indicators of sustainable and inclusive urban passenger transport. The Atlas includes measurements of nine indicators for over 1,000 metropolitan areas, as well as measurements over 40,000 of legal jurisdictions and districts. These indicators do not just measure infrastructure: they measure what infrastructure means for people. This includes:
- Population Density
- Block Density
- People Near Protected Bike Lanes
- People Near Services
- People Near Car-Free Places
- People Safe From Highways
- People Near Frequent Transport
- People Near Rapid Transport
- People Near Bikeways + Transport
Policymakers and planners at many levels of government, seeking to set goals for the expansion of sustainable infrastructure, may take advantage of the up-to-date, easy-to-understand Atlas indicators.
As ITDP will update the Atlas regularly, cities will be able to use it to track progress. The Atlas is intended to be especially useful in low- and middle-income countries. Urban transport advocates and journalists may use the Atlas to compare cities within a country, or even neighborhoods within a city. The Atlas can generate rankings, graphs, and maps for download as well. Interested citizens may find an opportunity to learn something new about the fabric of their home cities.
ITDP built the Atlas on open data sources, and, in turn, the data in the Atlas is published openly—anyone is welcome to use this data for their own research.
Note: The Atlas was inspired by platforms like ITDP Brazil’s MobiliDADOS, which launched in 2017 with a focus on Brazil. For assessing mobility projects in Brazil, MobiliDADOS is the primary source for detailed information. The Atlas does permit further comparisons between Brazilian cities and other global cities.
