Policy is the key to a net-zero emissions future
Just as some countries and sectors matter most to accelerating carbon emission reductions, specific policies should also be prioritized to more rapidly decarbonize our economy. We cannot stop climate change without committing to reaching the four zeros in the energy-consuming economic sectors:
1. Zero carbon grid
2. Zero-emission vehicles
3. Zero-emission buildings
4. Zero-waste manufacturing
The way to judge any climate strategy is to see if it contributes rapidly, at a large scale, to at least one of these four zeros. It turns out that just a handful of core policies in each of the energy-consuming sectors can make enormous contributions, while hundreds only make modest improvements.
